STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County Governing Board of the Educational Service Center re-elected Ken Simeral as board president and Larry George as vice president during a brief reorganizational meeting Tuesday.
The board also agreed to hold monthly meetings at 10:30 a.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.
During the regular board meeting, approval was given for the second of three payments of $2,500 for resource officers on duty in the Edison Local, Indian Creek Local and Buckeye Local school districts.
The board members also asked Superintendent Joy Howell to investigate ways the county board can help local school districts find ways to fund additional resource officers in the future.
The board unanimously approved a resolution to purchase advertising space in the 2013 Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce membership directory.
And the board approved the hiring of Gina Waggoner as a special needs preschool teacher.
Ron Sismondo, supervisor of professional curriculum development at the ESC, reported student learning objective training for administrators and teachers has started and will continue through February.
"We have 11 sessions scheduled. This is a great process that also benefits the teachers to help standards in their teaching. There will be a lot of time invested in this program," said Sismondo.
The board heard an update on the Virtual Learning Academy from Christy Kelley, who reported interest in the online school is increasing.
And Susie Fristick updated the school board on efforts to align local standards with state standards.
Howell, during the meeting, recognized the five board members for their dedication and commitment to area school children.
