The Brilliant Lions Club, which meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of the month at the Wells Township Community/Senior Center in Brilliant, had a productive 2012 that ended with its annual Christmas party.
Sixty Lions and their families gathered Dec. 6 for a buffet dinner prepared by the Country Cottage Cafe Restaurant in Brilliant. Ron Retzer provided entertainment.,
Many activities demonstrating the club's service to the community came to fruition during 2012. Among the club's achievements were:
Purchased 12 coats and pairs of gloves for grade school children;
Helped deliver 42 food baskets to needy families;
Donated $250 to support students attending Buckeye Boys State;
Provided $250 scholarships to two Buckeye Local High School students;
Donated 200 pairs of glasses;
Sponsored two blood drives for the American Red Cross in cooperation with the Brilliant Volunteer Fire Department, Senior Citizens and Brilliant American Legion Post 573 that collected 30 units of blood.
Donated $50 and 10 mops and gloves to assist in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts; and
Held a successful turkey dinner major fundraiser in conjunction with the Brilliant Presbyterian Church.
The club recently grew to 42 members with the induction of Donald Hutchinson, Brilliant fire chief.
