The General Federation of Women's Clubs is accepting applications for its Success for Survivors Scholarship, which is available to those who have been abused by intimate partners and are seeking full-time higher education to advance their careers, train for a new career or re-enter the job market.
The group, which includes several local woman's clubs and many throughout the state, introduced the scholarships last year, awarding $1,000 to each of six recipients.
This year the amount of the scholarships has been increased to $2,500. They are funded by donations from GFWC members and other supporters of the group's Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Fund.
The deadline for applications is Feb. 1. For information, contact Jo-Ellen Wright, GFWC-WV Northern District president; or Helen Moren, president of the Bethany Woman's Club at (304) 829-4706; or visit www.gfwc.org/gfwc/Success-for-Survivors-Scholarship.
"According to studies, a higher education can help survivors obtain careers and provide a brighter future," said Moren. "We are grateful for our generous donors who positively impact individuals' pursuit of education and independence."
"GFWC has a 122-year history of enhancing the lives of others through community improvement and volunteer service," said GFWC International President Mary Ellen Laister. "The GFWC Success for Survivors Scholarship makes a difference in the lives of intimate partner abuse survivors around the country by helping them pursue their education and career dreams."
