Library announces programming

WHEELING - The Ohio County Public Library staff have announced the library's March programming.

They include:

1 p.m. March 2, "Bake a Cake for Dr. Seuss Cake-Decorating Contest." Individuals and families may work together to create a Seuss-themed cake for the contest, and prizes will be awarded. Following the contest, there will be a reading of "The Cat in the Hat," and a "decorate your own book bag" craft. The cakes will be shared as those participating sing "Happy Birthday" to Dr. Seuss. Registration is required; register by calling (304) 232-0244.

noon March 5, "Lunch With Books: 'Potomac' with Richard Owens." Owens will discuss his book "Potomac," which features a series of mysterious murders and an assassination attempt against a backdrop of America's politics, military and diplomatic corps on the eve of World War II. Patrons are invited to bring a bag lunch and free beverages are served. Call (304) 232-0244 for information.

noon March 12, "Lunch With Books: A Visit by Grace O'Malley." Karen Vuranch will portray Granuaile, known as the "Seas Queen of Connacht" and the "Irish Pirate Queen," who was a chieftain, warrior and nemesis of Elizabeth I. 6:30 p.m. March 18, "Women in Science." Children will learn about the contributions of famous women in science and then will participate in hands-on science demonstrations with Libby and Robert Strong of SMART Science.

noon March 19, "Lunch With Books: A Civil War Hospital Steward's Story." Alan West will discuss his book, based on 230 letters from a Civil War hospital steward to his wife. Daniel McKinley Martin traveled from Pittsburgh to Wheeling to enlist in the Second Virginia Regiment, later known as the Fifth West Virginia Cavalry.

In the letters, he mentioned a number of Wheeling doctors and other notables. Patrons are invited to bring a bag lunch and free beverages are served. Call (304) 232-0244 for information.

noon March 23, "Mary Jemison Visit." Joanna Demarest will portray Mary Jemison and discuss her capture and adoption by the Senecas.

. noon March 26, "Lunch With Books: Women in the Civil War." In honor of Women's History Month, Betsy Estilow of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine returns to discuss the activities and roles of Union and Confederate women during the Civil War.

Patrons are invited to bring a bag lunch and free beverages are served.
