CERTIFIED: Sheila Riffle, administrative assistant to the vice president for administrative services at Eastern Gateway Community College, has earned certification as a professional in human resources.

The certification, awarded by the HR Certification Institute, signifies that Riffle has the theoretical knowledge and practical experience in human resource management necessary to pass an examination demonstrating a mastery of the field.

"Certification as a human resource professional clearly demonstrates a commitment to personal excellence and to the human resource profession," said Mary Power, CAE, executive director of the HR Certification Institute.

The HR Certification Institute is the credentialing body for human resource professionals and is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management, the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to the human resource profession. The institute seeks to promote the establishment of professional standards and to recognize professionals who meet those standards.

A Wintersville resident, Riffle is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management. Prior to joining the college in 1994, she worked at the former St. John Medical Center.

HONORED: Longtime Weirton Medical Center employee Monica Grossi is the facility's 2012 Employee of the Year.

Grossi, a 32-year employee, has been a registered nurse in WMC's Pediatric Department since 1981.

A graduate of Madonna High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, she says her favorite part of her job is "my kids."

"Monica has a way of brightening the day of everyone she encounters. Couple that with excellent nursing skills and an unmatched compassion, you get Monica Grossi," said WMC Communications Director Kelli McCoy.

ACCREDITED: Life Line Hospital in Wintersville has earned the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with its national standards for health care quality and safety in hospitals.

Life Line underwent a rigorous unannounced on-site survey in September.

A team of expert surveyors evaluated the hospital for compliance with numerous standards including infection prevention and control, medication management, and leadership.

"With joint commission accreditation, we are making a significant investment in quality on a day-to-day basis and involving all employees in the hospital. The accreditation helps us create and maintain a culture of excellence," said James L. Steinkirchner, chief executive officer.

Life Line Hospital is a physician-owned, long-term acute care hospital providing care to medically complex patients.

PROMOTED: West Liberty University administrator Sherri Mason has been promoted to financial reporting manager.

In her new role, she will continue to be responsible for external reporting, act as the lead on the West Virginia OASIS project and supervise the new senior accountant, payroll and accounts payable department.

She is a graduate of Fairmont State University, earning a bachelor of science in accountancy degree, and resides in Sherrard, W.Va., with her husband and two daughters.
