Panthers fall to Weir

RAYLAND - The Weir High girls basketball team held off a Buckeye Local charge Thursday evening and came away with a 47-39 road victory.

The Red Riders moved to 8-9 and will visit North Marion Saturday afternoon. They will then head to St. Clairsville for a Monday contest in the consolation pool play in the Wheeling Hospital Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Tournament.

Raegan Stead paced Weir High with a game-high 15 points. Raven Young added nine and Alyssa Shingle and Shelva Burns eight each.

Kierstyn Czuchran led the Panthers (3-16) with 10 points. Becky Zeroski and Lauren Swiger chipped in with eight apiece.

Buckeye Local visits Meadowbrook Wednesday in the OVAC Tournament.

Red Knights defeat Royals

TORONTO - The Jefferson County Christian girls basketball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead Thursday night at Toronto, but the rest of the way was all Red Knights in a 61-23 victory.

Lindsay Bodnar led the way to Toronto's 12th victory in 18 starts with a game-high 18 points, 15 coming in the 47-point first half.

Makayla Bauman added 11, Malaysia Harrison nine and Shane Sears seven for the Red Knights, who welcome Buckeye Trail on Monday.

The Royals were paced by Lani Moro's 11 points.

Jefferson County Christian hosts Heartland Christian at 5 p.m. Monday at the Millsop Community Center.

Mohigans stop Brooke

MORGANTOWN - The Morgantown girls basketball team jumped on visiting Brooke in the first half, raced to a 47-13 lead at halftime and finished with a 66-31 victory Thursday.

The Bruins, who head to Edison Monday in the OVAC Tournament, were led by Angela Staffileno's 15 points. Michaela Hinerman added 12.

Tornadoes top Big Red

STEUBENVILLE - The visiting Dover girls basketball team thwarted any possible comeback by Steubenville Big Red with a 23-8 advantage in the third quarter during Thursday's 66-41 victory Thursday night inside the Crimson Center.

Taylor Young led Big Red with 11 points. Lysaih Rice added 10.

Steubenville (13-6) hosts Cleveland East Tech at noon Saturday.
