Valley Hospice seeks volunteers

February 5, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

Valley Hospice will hold volunteer training from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday at Liza's Place, Valley Hospice Care Center South, in Wheeling, and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March at Valley Hospice Care Center North at Trinity East Medical Center in Steubenville.

Individuals who want to work with patients and family members will be required to attend another full day of training or two half-day sessions, based on the volunteer's schedule and preference.

"Our volunteers are an integral part of the Valley Hospice team," said Debbie Barto, director of volunteer services. "They help us care for our patients and families and assist our staff in a variety of different ways. Without their efforts, we could not do what we do."

Ongoing opportunities include providing companionship to patients with a life-limiting illness in their homes, nursing facilities or at one of our care centers; veterans providing companionship and support to other veterans; reading a book, listening and reminiscing; greeting families, baking cookies and providing hospitality at Liza's Place; making family follow-up calls; or completing necessary office tasks.

Several new volunteer opportunities are available at Liza's Place that center around the Valley Hospice Residential Care patients, according to Barto. Volunteers are needed to help with activities, such as bingo, luncheons, movie viewings, crafts, puzzles and card games.

"I love my time at Liza's Place," said Margie Fisher, volunteer pianist. "Music is good therapy for the patients and everyone, really. I've made a lot of new friends - the staff, patients and their families. Volunteering my time to play the piano does me as much good as it does for those I serve," Fisher said

"If you have a talent that would benefit Valley Hospice patients and families, but it isn't listed, contact us," Barto said.
