Weir runs away from ’Cats; Creek wins

WEIRTON - Weir started the game on an 18-5 run to set the tone Thursday night and rolled to 60-37 win over Edison in OVAC girls basketball pool play at the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.

The Lady Red Riders rode the strength of senior Shelva Burns' career-high 24 points as they reached the .500 mark at 9-9. Weir sophomore Raegan Stead scored the game's first seven points and finished with 18 points. Weir junior point guard Alyssa Shingle scored nine points and dished eight assists.

The Lady Riders cooled off a bit at the end of the first quarter and Edison closed the gap to 24-16 by quarter's end, but Weir then held the Lady Wildcats to six points during the next two quarters to hold a 51-22 advantage going into the final stanza.

Katelyn Pollock scored nine and Molly McCoy added seven to pace Edison, which fell to 4-17.

The Wildcats host Brooke with a noon junior varsity start Saturday.

Weir returns to action Monday when it hosts Madonna.

Creek tops Monarchs

WINTERSVILLE - The Indian Creek girls basketball team sent visiting John Marshall home with a 60-53 defeat Thursday.

A trio of Redskins reached double-figures led by Bre Berryman's 23 points. Brooke Mains added 14 and Bethany Davis chipped in 10. Kiarra Kamarec pitched in with nine points.

Indian Creek (16-6) starts Sectional play Thursday against Tri-Valley.

Knight leads Crusaders

STEUBENVILLE - The Steubenville Catholic Central girls basketball team rolled to a 58-36 win over Caldwell Thursday at Mickey Barber Gymnasium.

Senior Tori Knight exploded for 23 points to lead the Crusaders. Knight drained six shots from behind the three-point arc. Miranda Parkinson added eight points.

Central (7-13) travels to Barnesville Monday.

Potters beat Brooke

EAST LIVERPOOL - The Brooke girls basketball team dropped a 71-61 decision at East Liverpool Thursday.

Angela Staffileno scored 31 in the loss. Michaela Hinerman added 12 points.

Brooke goes to Edison Saturday.

Golden Bears nip Jets

NEW MANCHESTER - The Oak Glen girls basketball team redeemed itself with a 43-41 win on Thursday over visiting Union Local in the OVAC Class 4A consolation game.

On Monday, the Bears dropped a 53-39 decision against Steubenville in an OVAC tournament opener.

Oak Glen fell behind early, 10-8, after one quarter of play, but rebounded to take the lead in the second quarter and never looked back.

Vanessa Hissam paced Oak Glen with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Jessica Stivason and Alex Arnott both finished with nine points.

For Union Local, Cori Medley led with 17 points.

The Bears (10-8) return to action on Monday at Brooke.

Panthers defeat Shamrocks

RAYLAND - The Buckeye Local girls basketball team jumped out to an 18-2 lead after eight minutes and cruised to a 58-43 victory over Barnesville Thursday evening.

Kayla Fillipovich and Becky Zeroski evenly split 30 points and Lauren Swiger chipped in with 13 for the winners.

BLACKSVILLE - The Madonna boys basketball team fell 65-50 at Clay-Battelle Thursday.

Tyler Ewusiak scored 17 points to lead the Blue Dons. Kaleb Baire added nine and Josh Martin pitched in with eight.
