Ash Wednesday

February 13, 2013
Weirton Daily Times
The Rev. Timothy Huffman, pastor of St. Peter Catholic Church in Steubenville marked the forehead of Deacon Tom Maedke with ashes this morning as part of the Ash Wednesday service that begins the 40-day Lenten season in Christianity. The ashes used in the ceremony are made from burning the remains of palms from Palm Sunday of the previous year. The ashes are a symbol for the faithful to repent of their sins and also symbolize death and remind the faithful of their mortality. The priest uses his thumb to sign one of the faithful with the ashes saying, “Remember, man, that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return.”
