As we begin the 81st Legislature, I am honored to be representing and working for the hard-working citizens of Hancock and Brooke counties. It is with great pleasure that I will once again be keeping you updated on legislation and news that is important to the state and especially the Northern Panhandle.
I was very humbled by Speaker Rick Thompson's appointment as his Speaker Pro Tempore. I believe this position is a win for the citizens and businesses of the Northern Panhandle and look forward to working with Rick and the leadership team in continuing to move West Virginia forward and providing responsible and fiscally sound government.
The first week is behind us and with the additional responsibilities of my newly appointed position as Speaker Pro Tempore; it was a busy week that went by very fast. There were a lot of committee organizational meetings which is common for the beginning of a new legislative session. Our legislative bill drafting staff has been busy for several months working on rollover bills, as well as newly drafted bills, and we saw many of them surfacing out of the hopper and being assigned to committees.
There are also a lot of new members in the legislature this year and it's always a lot of work and fun in helping them get accustomed to the legislative procedures and pointing them in the right direction to get to their committees meetings. I can still remember how helpful and friendly everyone was my first year of running the halls of the Capitol, 13-years ago. I truly enjoy meeting and getting to know all the new members, learning and understanding what is important to them and their respective areas. I have always believed, we are all in this together and we have a common goal of making a better West Virginia for all of our families.
I look forward to hearing from you during the Legislative Session regarding issues or concerns that are important to you. Watch for legislative updates and pictures as I continue to take advantage of social networking via Facebook and Twitter. I have been using these methods of staying connected to friends and constituents alike for the past three years and I get a lot of positive feedback. My goal is to be easily accessible to everyone; therefore, feel free to contact me anytime, or stop by if you are in Charleston.
