Mingo Woman’s Club topic ‘aims’ to educate

February 28, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

The February meeting of the GFWC Woman's Club of Mingo was held at the Mingo Senior Citizens Center where Sharon Cole-Isner, presided, and Joanne Gorney gave the invocation.

Kathy Maguschak led in opening ceremonies and introduced the guest speaker, her brother Tom Valuska.

Certified to teach concealed carry, Valuska has been around guns for approximately 28 years and addressed safety issues with respect to weapons. All guns should be locked up, especially if there are children at the residence, he said. Weapon training is geared toward safety with common sense needed in handling guns, he said.

Some of the weapons he told members about were 9mm guns, semi-automatic weapons, assault weapons, pump shotguns and rifles. He explained the difference between civilian available semi-automatic and military-only automatic weapons. Asked about what kind of a gun would be the best weapon for women, Valuska noted there are many factors when considering which is the best. He also spoke on the damage that different weapons can do and addressed in-home defense. A question and answer period followed.

The members wore red and brought their red dress pin in honor of Valentine's Day and Heart Health Month.

The club received thank-you notes from the ALIVE Shelter and the Ohio Children's Trust Fund, the latter for partnering with it in investing in strong communities, healthy families and safe children.

Stephanie Rouse announced that the mystery dinner theater - "The Dead of the Class" - will be held on April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mingo Knights of Columbus Hall. There will be a Chinese auction chaired by Diana Taylor, and the 50/50 chair will be Clara Sue Milewsky assisted by Cheri Carpico.

Cole-Isner announced that Rouse will be the chairman of the trustees of the Memorial Shrine at Mohican Forest. Cole-Isner, Janet Petrella and Cheri Carpico will be the representatives of the GFWC Woman's Club of Mingo.

Mary Jane Tiberio announced the spring banquet will be held on May 9 at the Triple Play Cafe in Steubenville.

A proposed change to the bylaws was announced by Petrella.

The 2013 Southeast District Legislation Day will be held on March 23 at St. Florian Hall. GFWC Wintersville Woman's Club will serve as host.

The state convention will be held April 26-28.

At future club meetings, members are asked to participate in a new project by bringing used eyeglasses to the meeting for donation to the Mingo Lions club.

Cole-Isner ended the meeting with a definition of "THINK (before you speak). "T is it True? H is it Helpful? I is it Inspiring? N is it Necessary? K is it Kind?" She asked everyone to try using these five items of criteria before speaking.

Cheri Carpico won the Valentine door prize.

Members of the Community Service Project, Public Issues Committee were hostesses for the evening. Maguschak, chairman, was assisted by Gorney and Milewsky. Stella Finnegan also is a member of the committee.

The next meeting will be held March 14 with Petrella as chairman.
