Cross distribution continues

March 2, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

Easter cross distributions will be continuing today out of the Tower of Power Church located at 1310 Maryland Ave., Steubenville, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Working with Pastor Everett Mitchell and Elder James Wooden of Tower of Power Church will be the Rev. Vaughn Foster of Christ's Community Church and Pastor Joseph Gamble of the Love Center of Steubenville. Other churches in the city will be joining in the effort to distribute crosses in their neighborhood.

The Easter Cross Project's mission is to promote the idea of unity throughout the city by placing a cross, representing the cross of Christ, in the yard of each household in the city of Steubenville.

"This mission will be accomplished by sending out distribution teams, comprised of volunteers from churches throughout the Valley, into different areas of Steubenville," according to a news release. The teams will be sent out from different churches each Saturday for five Saturdays through March 23.

The campaign concludes with an ecumenical service planned for Good Friday, March 29, at First Westminster Presbyterian Church in Steubenville at noon. The service will be followed by the Christ Walk set to begin at 1 p.m. in which individuals are encouraged to walk, holding their crosses, as they proceed from First Westminster Presbyterian Church to Crossroads Christian Church in Wintersville.

The kickoff distribution Feb. 23 out of the Word of Life Fellowship on Lovers Lane went well, with many crosses distributed, according to its pastor, the Rev. Gary Hallberg.

The contributed photos on this page were taken at the kickoff.

Churches involved with the project so far are: Calvary Church, Pastor John Kotsanos; Christ's Community Church, the Rev. Vaughn Foster; Crossroads Christian Church, Pastor Jeff Greco and Pastor Chad Thompson; Holy Family Catholic Church, the Rev. Gerald Calovini; Starkdale Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Philip Makari and Pastor Bobbyjon Bauman; the Love Center of Steubenville, Pastor Joseph Gamble; Tower of Power Church, Pastor Everett Mitchell; Wintersville Church of the Nazarene, Pastor Kelly Green; Wintersville United Methodist Church, the Rev. Clint Quillen; and Word of Life Fellowship, Pastor Gary Hallberg.

Other churches throughout the Valley are welcome to join with these churches in the project, a spokesman said. For information, call (740) 264-1227.

The Easter crosses are to be placed in the yard on Good Friday with the blank side showing. On Easter morning, they are to be turned to reveal the words "Jesus is Risen." Any donations collected during the event will benefit Urban Mission Ministries located at 301 N. Fifth St., Steubenville.
