Weirton's Dorothy Huffman

celebrates 100th birthday

WEIRTON?- Resident Dorothy O. Spencer Huffman celebrated her 100th birthday Friday.

The only child of the late Eli and Jettie Nichols Spencer of Alma, she was born March 1, 1913.

She attended Tyler County High School in Middlebourn and in 1931 married Fred D. Huffman, who died in 1967.

They had three children, including Paul D. Huffman and Glenda Sue Maylee, both of whom are deceased, and Donna Barkley of Weirton.

Her family includes seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She is a former member of Kings Creek Chapel Ladies Aid Society and Hancock County Homemakers.

She is a member of Weirton First Church of the Nazarene where she taught junior and senior Sunday School class for 39 years.

Huffman worked for Anile State Line Pharmacy, Greenlief Pharmacy and Rite Aid Pharmacy, retiring at age 86.

She loves to travel, having been to Israel, Ireland, Egypt and Hawaii, and has been an avid seamstress, enjoying knitting, tatting and crochet. She has made many afghans, giving them as gifts through the years. She also likes to watch television and phone family and friends.

She has a cat named Dutch.

A party in her honor was held Saturday.

Class of 1961 to meet

WEIRTON - The Follansbee High School Class of 1961 will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Three Springs Drive Eat'n Park.

All classmates, spouses and guests are welcome.

Reunion commitee meeting

WEIRTON - The Weir High School Class of 1953 Reunion Committee will hold a planning meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Knights of Columbus.

All classmates are encouraged to attend the meeting.

George to address writers society

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - The Tri-State Writers Society, led by award-winning author Karen Majoris-Garrison, will meet at 6 p.m. March 12 at the Mall Drive Eat'n Park.

Kerry George will speak about his book on coal mining "Black Damp Century."

All aspiring writers are invited to attend.

Gnocchi sale scheduled

MARTINS FERRY, Ohio - St. Mary's Church is holding the fourth annual Grandma's Homemade Gnocchi Sale.

Gnocchi is $5 a pound. Pre-orders can be made by calling (740) 633-3877 before March 13.

Orders will be ready for pickup between 10 a.m. and noon March 23 at the church located at 20 N. Fourth St.

Church selling Easter bread

WEIRTON - The All Saints Orthodox Church Philoptochos Society will hold its Greek Easter bake sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until sold out March 21 at the Hellenic Memorial Hall located at West St.

Greek Easter Bread is $7, koulourakia is $5 per dozen and frozen, ready to cook spanakopita rolls are $8. No pre-orders will be accepted.

Proceeds benefit charity.

Auxiliary holding craft show

HOOKSTOWN, Pa. - The Hookstown American Legion Ladies Auxiliary will host a spring craft show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 23-24.

The kitchen will be open. Admission is free. Crafter tables are still available.

Greek Festival dates announced

WEIRTON - The 26th annual Weirton Greek Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 18-20 at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church located at 3528 West St.

The event will feature Greek food, music and dancing; a market place; and church tours.
