SMITHFIELD - Jefferson County authorities were investigating an apparent bank robbery Monday morning in Smithfield.
Witnesses say Jefferson County sheriff's deputies were called to the U.S. Bank, 1210 Main St., shortly after 9 a.m. Minutes later, sources with the sheriff's department confirmed a robbery had taken place, although further details were not immediately available.
Bank customers were being turned away, one caller reported.
Reports indicated that the alleged bandit was armed. Employees at the Smithfield village building reported they were told to lock their doors while the search continued.
