For the last several years, the city of Weirton has looked to nominate some of those who have been among the greatest contributors to the history of the community.
The Weirton Hall of Fame was created as a way to honor and preserve the residents, past and present, who have led the city since its founding in 1947.
The committee in charge of the hall of fame currently is seeking nominees for this year's class, and we encourage our residents to think about submitting some of their favorites for consideration.
Individuals can be nominated into one of six categories: philanthropy; public service; music and fine arts; education and religion; sports and athletics; and business, industry and professionals. All nominations must be submitted in writing, signed and dated by the individuals making the nominations with the application by May 1.
A dinner and induction ceremony will be held in August.
It is important for every community to remember its history and heritage. The city of Weirton has taken great strides in recent years to do just that, with the development and expansion of its museum and the creation of the hall of fame.
Dozens of Weirton's founders, industrialists, educators and civic leaders already have been recognized, and will be preserved for generations to come, but there are so many more who have made lofty contributions and are deserving of such a tribute.
If you have someone you feel is deserving of such an honor, we urge you to take the next few weeks to learn about the nomination process and put their name forward for possible induction into the Weirton Hall of Fame.
