Planning for Morgan’s Raid Commemoration continues

Weirton Daily Times

The next Morgan's Raid Commemoration meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Department as plans continue to acknowledge the 150th anniversary of the raid.

Plans for a three-county, two-day event on July 27 and 28 are under way, involving Jefferson and Carroll counties and the Wellsville Historical Society in Columbiana County.

The committee is using the book entitled "The Last Night and The Last Day," written by J.H. Simms in 1913, as a guide for the commemoration that will highlight several local events in the most northern soil that the nation's Civil War touched.

"Anyone interested in the Civil War and local history is invited to attend this meeting," said Virginia Glenn, committee member. "We are encouraging people who had ancestors who were involved in this raid in any way, by feeding either the Confederate or Union forces, having them stay at their homes or had their horses stolen during the raid in 1863," Glenn said.

Morgan and his men conducted raids throughout Ohio in July of 1863 and were captured in West Point, Ohio. Morgan and his men spent their last night of freedom in Nebo - now Bergholz - and their first night in captivity in the Whitacre Hotel in Wellsville.

The John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail Tour marks the route of the raiders with 56 kiosk signs and 700 directional signs throughout Ohio.

Dr. Keith Burgett of the Carrollton Veterinary Clinic has an original copy of "The Last Night and The Last Day" that the committee wants to reprint to promote the July event.
