Smyth earns honor
PRINCETON, W.Va. - After highlighting the West Liberty University baseball team's weekend sweep of Pitt-Johnstown with a complete-game shutout, Mark Smyth has been honored as the West Virginia Conference Pitcher of the Week.
The 6-foot-2 freshman from Edison High School was in complete command Saturday afternoon as he blanked the Mountain Cats, 1-0, in the first game of a WVIAC doubleheader.
Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (11-7, 9-0) posted a 4-3 win in the second game of the twinbill and rallied for a 7-6 victory in Sunday's 9-inning game to pad their WVIAC Northern Division lead.
Smyth scattered three harmless singles and never allowed a UPJ runner past first base in a dominant performance. The rookie hurler had three strikeouts without a walk and was charted with 10 ground ball outs and eight fly ball outs in the fast-paced game.
