WINTERSVILLE - Indian Creek looked double impressive against Steubenville Friday at Bantam Ridge.

The Redskins showed pop with their bats and received a strong effort in the circle from Paige Geanangel en route to an 11-1, five-inning, victory over Steubenville.

"Right now we're playing very well," said Indian Creek head coach Angie Penner. "Our seniors are leading, Paige Gean (Geanangel) pitched well tonight. I'm very proud of our kids because we were in a ball game last night where we made some errors and we went into extra innings with Oak Glen, but we won the game 10-8.

READY TO GO — Indian Creek first baseman Brey Mays sets herself defensively as Big Red’s Brooke Carroll gets ready to run during the Redskins 11-1 victory Friday in Wintersville.

"I was proud of their mental toughness in the eight inning last night (Thursday) and how we came out here after a game like that."

Big Red head coach Gus DiMarzio didn't see the same fight in his team that he saw in Thursday's tight 1-0 loss to Steubenville Central, something he puts squarely on his shoulders.

"As hard as we fought yesterday, and played against Central, we were dead flat today," he sadi. "When your team is flat and not ready to play it goes back to the guy you're talking to.

Indian Creek 302 06 - 11 11 3

BIG RED (3-4): Perrino (LP, 0K, 2BB) and Barker. Giannamore S; Barker S; Biasi R.

INDIAN CREEK (4-0): Geanangel (WP, 8K, 3BB) and Orr. Mays 2D, 3RBI, R; Markja 2S, RBI, 2R; Geanangel S, 2R; DeMattio HR, S, 3RBI, 3R; Orr D, RBI; Monroe D, S, 2RBI, R; Sullivan S, R; Davis R.

"Am I disappointed? Yeah because I thought we had a little bit more fight than that."

Geanangel struck out eight while allowing just two hits on the way to her fourth win of the season.

At the plate Indian Creek opened quickly when Paige DeMattio blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the first for the 3-0 lead.

Abbey Orr and Alexis Monroe chased two more runs across in the third - Orr with an RBI double and Monroe on a sacrifice fly that made the score 5-0 Redskins.

Big Red scored its run in the top of the fifth. Carmie Biasi reached on a fielder's choice and was pushed to third on a Mytia Barker single. During Christina Archer's at bat, Barker was put out in a rundown between first and second which allowed Biasi to make the score 5-1.

A six-run bottom of the fifth closed the deal for Indian Creek. Brey Mays did the most damage in the frame with a three-run double. Monroe and Megan Markja had RBI singles in the fifth as well.

"We did little things wrong today, and when you do little things wrong they end up compounding and becoming huge things," said DiMarzio. "Dropped fly balls, kicked balls, balls that should be outs we don't make.

"Your pitcher is out there fighting, and then you're behind her. When you're team's not behind her, again, the finger goes back to the guy that drives the bus, and I'm the bus driver so I guess it's my fault.

"No, I don't guess, I know it's my fault."

For the game DeMattio had a home run, single, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Mays had two doubles, drove in three runs, and scored once. Monroe had a double and single to go with her two RBIs and one run scored.

"We're hitting the ball really hard," said Penner. "It's nice to get our speed on bases and have our hitters bring them in. We're getting solid performances at the plate one through nine.

"Actually it's been more like one through 10 or 11 for us so far. We work really hard on hitting. They like to hit every day before we go to our game. It's been like our ritual and it's been paying off."

Big Red received a lead off single from Mallory Giannamore to go with Barker's fifth inning hit.

Indian Creek (4-0) hosts Cambridge for a doubleheader today starting at noon.

Big Red (3-4) travels to Martins Ferry Monday.

"We'll take two days, go back to work, and we'll recoup," said DiMarzio. "The one thing they say about Big Red kids is they're tough so we're going to be tough about this, and we're going to figure this out."
