Festival to be held at Millsop

WEIRTON - The annual Weirton Festival of Nations, scheduled to take place Saturday, will now take place at the Millsop Community Center, according to event organizers.

The festival originally had been set for the Weirton Event Center; however, Museum President Dennis Jones and Dr. J.K. Luthra, the event's chair, decided to make the move because of expected weather.

"Due to a gloomy weather forecast for Saturday, Dr. Luthra and I have decided to change the Festival of Nations venue from the Weirton Event Center to the Weirton Millsop Community Center," Jones said in an email Monday morning.

The current forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies with a high temperature of 46 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Festival of Nations still will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the following schedule of events:

11 a.m.: Tri-State Young Marines Color Guard will perform the flag raising

11:05 a.m.: Sheena Chopra, of Weirton, will sing the national anthem

11:10 a.m.: Mayor George Kondik will help welcome attendees

11:15 a.m.: Dennis Jones will provide an introduction of the day's events and participants

11:20 a.m.: A presentation by Gretchen Weir, wife of the late David Weir, and their daughter Maisie Weir

11:25 a.m.: A welcome by Dr. J.K. Luthra, festival committee chair

11:30 a.m.: China, represented by Yan Lai Dance Academy of Pittsburgh

11:50: India, musical performance by Akshay Hari of Pittsburgh

noon: Philippines, represented by Philippines-American Performing Arts of Greater Pittsburgh

12:20 p.m.: America, song performed by Carrie Oliver-Shultz of Weirton

12:25 p.m.: Ukraine: represented by Kyiv Ukrainian Dance Ensemble of Carnegie, Pa.

12:45 p.m.: America, song performed by Sheena Chopra of Weirton

12:50 p.m.: Italy, songs performed by Sofia-Teresa DiBacco and Lucia DiBacco of Weirton

1 p.m.: Italy, represented by Italian American Cultural Club Dancers of Steubenville

1:20 p.m.: Greece, represented by Grecian Odyssey Dancers of East Pittsburgh

1:40 p.m.: Scotland, bagpipes played by Nila Boyd of Wellsburg

1:50 p.m.: African-American, performance by Kingdom Children of Steubenville

2:05 p.m.: Civil War-era and Irish dances by Heritage Dance Association of Wheeling

2:25 p.m.: Japan, represented by Tadashi Tadashi of Fairmont

2:40 p.m.: Poland, accordion performance by Tom Zielinsky

The festival also will include various cultural displays and a selection of ethnic foods.
