Jefferson school board approves doctor for driver physicals

STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County Governing school board approved a resolution Tuesday approving Dr. William Johns to administer physical exams for school bus drivers at $40 a physical for the 2013-14 school year.

Educational Service Center Superintendent Joy Howell called Johns, "a blessing for providing this community service."

During the 25-minute meeting the school board also approved an initial list of eligible substitute teachers for the next school year. Howell said the substitute list will be revised monthly.

In other business, the board:

Approved renewing the annual membership to the Ohio School Boards Association and the monthly subscription fee for the "Briefcase" publication at a total cost of $2,783.

Approved the purchase of five $30 gift certificates for secretaries at the ESC in recognition of Administrative Professionals Day on April 24.

Acknowledged the third and final payment of $2,500 to the local school districts to help offset the cost of resource officers.

Commended Jodi Rielly from the Buckeye Local School District for achieving master teacher status.

Accepted with regrets the resignation of Jane Herron, a preschool speech and language pathologist for retirement purposes.

The school board also recognized and commended the students, staff and communities of three schools in the Jefferson County service area designated as Schools of Promise for 2011-12 school year.

"The Buckeye Local High School has been a School of Promise for three years, Hills Elementary School has been a School of Promise for five years, and Wells Elementary in Steubenville has achieved the School of Promise for nine years," declared Howell.

The school board met in executive session to discuss personnel matters for the 2013-14 school year.
