Speaker planned at Franciscan University

STEUBENVILLE - Curtis Martin, president and co-founder of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students, will discuss how future generations can heed Pope John Paul II's call to the new evangelization at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the St. Joseph Center's seminar room at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

The discussion is part of Franciscan's Distinguished Speakers Series, which keys on individuals who have distinguished themselves by integrating their faith and public life. It's a collaboration of the offices of advancement, student life, athletics and the center for leadership.

Martin and his wife, Michaelann, founded FOCUS at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., in 1998. Since then, FOCUS has grown to more than 300 missionaries serving 74 campuses in 30 states across the United States.

Martin is a 1993 MA graduate of Franciscan University. Pope Benedict XVI appointed Martin as a Consulter to the Pontifical Council of the New Evangelization in 2011.

County engineer releases work schedule

STEUBENVILLE - Jefferson County Engineer James Branagan released the work schedule for next week for the highway department.

Ditching - Bergholz-New Somerset Road (county Road 53); Mount Pleasant-Adena Road (county Road 6); and county Road 7G (Pottery Addition connector).

Road closings will be announced.

Road work announced for Northern Panhandle

The West Virginia Division of Highways has announced minor road work to be performed this week, pending suitable weather.

In Hancock County, crews will be patching Moores and Doris lanes and Dale Street, ditching along Jefferson Street and mowing along marks Run and Stewart Run roads and Lee and Willis ways.

In Brooke County, crews will be patching Cross Creek and Petit Heights roads and pulling shoulders and ditches along Genteel Ridge and Bradys Ridge roads.

County Road 53 to be closed

BERGHOLZ - Bergholz-New Somerset Road (county Road 53) will be closed in a section from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday to allow crews with the Jefferson County Engineer's Department to install a culvert.

The road will be closed at the intersection of county Road 53 and Ross Township Road 290. There will be no through traffic.
