STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church is observing Holy Week, Sunday through May 5.
Following the First Ecumenical Council rules established in 325 A.D. and the Julian calendar, the Orthodox feast of the Resurrection falls on May 5.
Palm Sunday will be observed with a Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. Sunday with the traditional children's procession around the church in imitation of the children of Israel, who greeted Jesus when he entered Jerusalem. Blessed branches will be distributed.
Bridegroom Matins will be served at 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday with services meditating on Christ's final actions as he prepared for the passion and encouraging those attending to be as watchful and faithful as the Wise Bridesmaids of the parable.
Holy Thursday will be observed May 2, with a 10 a.m. Divine Liturgy commemorating the Last Supper. The Matins of the Holy and Redeeming Passion of Our Lord and the 12 Passion Gospels will be served at 7 p.m. May 2. The service examines the Last Supper, betrayal, trial, crucifixion, death and burial of Jesus Christ.
Great and Holy Friday will be observed May 3 with a 7 p.m. service examining the burial of Christ, featuring lamentations and a procession around the church with the winding sheet depicting the burial of Christ. The winding sheet will be placed in a "tomb" prepared in the church's center for veneration by the faithful.
Great and Holy Saturday will be observed May 4 with a Vesperal Divine Liturgy with Holy Communion before the Tomb of Christ at 10 a.m., with the first proclamation of the resurrection and change to bright vestments.
Unlike previous years, the Pascha, or Easter, services will begin at 6 a.m. May 5 as a sunrise service, featuring the removal of Christ's winding sheet from the tomb, bringing it to the altar, and the Resurrection Matins with a candlelight procession around the Church and joyous proclamation of the resurrection. The Divine Liturgy of Pascha will immediately follow. Colored eggs will be blessed and distributed at the conclusion of the service.
