To the editor:
Everybody knows our valley is loaded with tireless leaders who give of themselves in support of our youth. Whether baseball or Cub Scouts and all points in between, these people spend their time guiding, coaching and modeling for our children. The lessons learned cannot be quantified but are absolutely invaluable in building our children into strong adults. Think for a minute about your activities as a child, and I bet many of those great coaches and leaders come to mind. These people deserve recognition and praise for their work.
People without active children in their lives may be surprised to learn that Wintersville is the home of a group of people and organizations that deserve recognition for their work with our youth. Basketball, flag football, cheering and soccer are the activities that I know about (there may be more). Players, coaches, officials and family. Victory, defeat, exhilaration and fatigue. Rules, penalties, frustration and perseverance. Individual skills, teamwork, frowns and smiles.
My list could fill a book - a microcosm of life presented for the positive development of our children.
They come early to open the doors and set up and stay late to clean up the mess. They juggle schedules and make last-minute adjustments for the game. They patiently deal with challenging children, and more importantly, parents. They pay for uniforms or shoes so every child can participate. They make sure that kids get to play equally without regard to skill level. They build kids' self-esteem by awarding stars for well demonstrated characteristics. They are a great asset to our community that should be recognized.
Please join me in saying, "Up, Up, Upwards - Great Job."
