DILLONVALE - The Buckeye Local School District's resource officer's contract through the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department was approved at Monday's board meeting.
Board member Joe Zelek voted against funding the position, saying the amount paid for the officer and the cruiser he uses are above what they should be.
Deputy Scott Polen serves as a full-time resource officer for the school district.
Board members also discussed the recent defeat of an emergency levy that would have helped fund security improvements district wide.
Board members, in an effort to make the district's buildings more safe, said they will seek the aid of Frank Hoagland, a retired Navy SEAL, who owns Special Tactics and Rescue Training in Mingo Junction.
Parent Mason Boyce spoke in favor of having Hoagland on board given his experience in safety and security.
The next meeting of the board has been moved to 8 a.m. on June 27 at the Dillonvale office. Safety committee members hope to have recommendations to bring to the board at that time based on Hoagland's assessment.
