Illegal immigration to be discussed
WELLSBURG - Solutions to illegal immigration will be discussed at the Lifetree Cafe at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Staffileno's on the River.
The program will include a screening of "Kids Without a Country: An Illegal Immigrant's Story," which involves Reyna Grande, who crossed the border with her family illegally with her family when she was 9 years old.
Admission to the 60-minute event is free.
Lifetree Cafe is an informal group in which people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting.

Author to speak at library
WELLSBURG - Bob Barnett, a former Newell resident, will discuss his new book, "Hillside Fields: A History of Sports in West Virginia," at 5:30 p.m. June 13 at the Brooke County Public Library.
The book provides a broad view of sports in West Virginia, from well-known athletes Jerry West and Mary Lou Retton to high school sports and the black high school basketball tournament held before integration, and how sports in the Mountain State have been influenced by economics and politics.
He will discuss such local topics as the 1964 West Liberty State College championship baseball team, which featured Follansbee's Ray Prantil and Wellsburg's Frank Ujcich and Fred Chambers. Ujcich, Chambers and Barnett will be available to sign books afterward.
Barnett taught sports history classes at Marshall University for 35 years.
His first book, "Growing up in the Last Small Town: A West Virginia Memoir," was about his childhood in Newell in the 1950s.
Children's knitting group to meet
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Library's Kids Knitting Group will meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the library's River Room.
Children in third grade or higher can learn to knit with help from instructor Nora Bell. They should bring yarn and needles or loom. Call (304) 737-1551 to register for the free program.
Class of '63 planning 50-year reunion
WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg High School Class of 1963 is planning its 50-year reunion for September.
Letters will be sent in June to many class members, but those who haven't received one should call Nola Wells Cronin at (304) 737-2359 or Sharon Filberto Welch at (304) 914-8111.
Flag-burning ceremony June 14
in Wellsburg Town Square
The Wellsburg Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 1553 will hold a flag-burning ceremony at 6 p.m. on June 14 at the Wellsburg Town Square.
The purpose of the ceremony is to retire flags that are worn to a condition that they should no longer be used to represent the nation, a spokesman said. Retired flags can be dropped off at the Wellsburg City Building or at the Elks Lodge at 834 Charles St. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.
