Weirton Daily Times

STEUBENVILLE - A City Police patrolman was placed on administrative leave Friday after an incident in which his son was brought to the Wintersville police station following an underage drinking party earlier that day.

Wintersville Police Capt. Louis Vandeborne said police were called about an underage drinking party in a field off state Route 43. Police arrived and some of the juveniles ran into the woods, while others stayed there, he said. Some of the juveniles were taken to the police station. The Steubenville officer was called to come to the station to get his son and Vandeborne said the Steubenville patrolman arrived "angry."

Vandeborne said the officer didn't assault any Wintersville officers.

City Police Chief William McCafferty said the officer was placed on paid administrative leave. Capt. Joel Walker of the police department's internal affairs unit is conducting an investigation.

McCafferty said he was informed about the incident involving the officer while the chief was at a raid early Friday morning at Club 106 on South Street. McCafferty said the officer was informed around noon of the decision concerning the administrative leave.

Vandeborne said charges against a couple of the juveniles are pending in juvenile court.

Vandeborne said the investigation is continuing as to how the juveniles obtained the alcohol.
