C.H.A.N.G.E. offers lunches for children

June 9, 2013
From staff reports , Weirton Daily Times

Beginning Monday, C.H.A.N.G.E. Inc. will again offer free lunches to area children at several area parks and schools.

Served and prepared by staff with the Weirton-based community action agency, the meals are funded with federal dollars issued through the West Virginia Department of Education's Office of Children Nutrition.

The meals are available to children 18 and under with the goal of making nutritious food available during the summer to youth who receive free or reduced price breakfasts and lunches during the school year.

Children aren't required to present proof of income to receive the meals, however.

In Weirton lunches will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Dunbar Center, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Weirton Christian Center, and 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Boys and Girls Club.

The Dunbar Center and Weirton Christian Center will be closed July 4 and the Boys and Girls Club will be closed July 1-5.

Lunches also will be served at Follansbee Park from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and at Wellsburg's 4th Ward Park from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The program is set to end on Aug. 9 at the above locations.

Lunches also will be served at Chester Park, beginning June 17, with details to be announced.

The agency also will provide meals for several summer programs held by local schools and the West Virginia University Extension Service, though the meals are available to children who aren't participants of those programs.

They include:

The West Virginia University Extension Service's Energy Express programs at Weir Middle School, Oak Glen Middle School and Jefferson Primary School in Follansbee from 9 am. to 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 24 to Aug. 2 except July 4.

Hancock County Schools' Bridges program from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 11:30 am. to noon at Weir and Oak Glen middle schools June 10 to 28.
