WEIRTON - Weirton City Council will hold a public hearing today on proposed changes to the city's charter.

The proposed changes would:

Modify the current city election date.

Consolidate polling sites, allowing up to three per ward.

Increase the dollar amount the city manager can spend

A written or verbal protest on any proposed charter change would force it on the ballot for a voter referendum.

The public hearing is slated for 7:30 p.m. today in council chambers, and will be followed by council's regular meeting.

Items slated to be discussed during the regular meeting include:

Proposed ordinances amending the Unified Development Table and installing "no parking between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. when school is in session" signs within 100 feet of the current 15 foot yellow line at 241 Greenbrier Road.

Proposed resolutions involving workers compensation insurance for city workers; a contribution to the Wheeling Symphony; annual maintenance and repair of the city's computer system hardware and software; revisions to the 2012-2013 budget; liens to recover costs incurred in demolition of unsafe properties; purchase of rescue saws for the Weirton Fire Department; authorizing Public Works crews to remove all planters on Main and West streets; authorizing application and acceptance for Community Participation Grant program funding for Starvaggi Pool; and changes to the code department's current policy.
