Cadiz council member announces plan to resign

CADIZ - Village Council member Michael McPeak announced Wednesday he is stepping down from council effective July 25.

Curtis W. Crawshaw, council president and acting mayor, said he was shocked and saddened by the news that McPeak, whose term expires 2015, is leaving. Crawshaw said McPeak has been a valuable asset to the community.

McPeak, who also served on the cemetery, finance and employee relations committees, told council that he made the decision due to a work conflict. He noted he has not made a decision about his seat on the park board for Sally Buffalo.

He thanked the public for support during his time on council.

The village will accept applications for appointment to the vacant seat.

Rich Milleson gave council an update on the Community Improvement Council activities, and Chris Connelly updated council on the management of Tax Increment Financing.

Connelly recommended meeting with the county auditor to take the next step in the process and anticipated recouping funds from the TIFs at the industrial park and in the north end section of town.

Milleson also introduced Donald Nims of Bergman and Associates, an engineering firm that conducts traffic studies.

Crawshaw agreed the village is starting to see an increase in traffic and said council needs to consider a corridor study to determine what projects will be needed in the future to maintain traffic flow through the village and ensure the safety of citizens on village roads.

Nims estimated a corridor survey to collect data and track traffic movement through the village would cost approximately $50,000.

In other business:

- Council approved hiring three temporary employees for Sally Buffalo Park - Anthony Hodge, Gary Bethel and Kade Richards.

- It was announced village police handed out 44 citations and recorded seven motor vehicle accidents.

- Members discussed the sidewalk construction across from the high school and directed the city solicitor to prepare a letter of notification for the property owner to remedy the code violations.

- A third reading of an ordinance authorizing the purchase of two police vehicles from Statewide Ford Lincoln was given.

- It was announced the planning committee will discuss the rezoning of the back half of 165 E. Market St.. which was incorrectly approved for business use while being zoned as residential.

- A public hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m. on July 11 prior to the next scheduled council meeting for rezoning of the lot at 419 Lincoln Ave. The council meeting was moved due to a conflict with the July 4 holiday.
