WELLSBURG - Wellsburg voters on Tuesday supported a mix of old and new candidates for police chief and three council seats.

A majority of voters re-elected Stanley Kins as police chief, a position he has held for 18 years.

Kins received 324 votes, while his challenger, former Wellsburg Police Captain Rudy Sovinski, received 161 votes.

All totals are unofficial until ballots are canvassed at 7 p.m. Monday at Wellsburg City Hall.

Voters in the city's 1st Ward also re-elected Bruce Hunter as their representative, while a majority in the 2nd Ward chose challenger Brian Tennant.

Totals for the two races are:

1st Ward Council: Hunter, 65; and David Holden, 21.

2nd Ward Council: Tennant, 96; and Ron Michaux, 52.

The winner of a seat representing the 4th Ward was going to be someone new since incumbent Jeff Tarr chose not to seek re-election.

But the race became more interesting when no one declared his or her candidacy for the seat during the filing period, and four residents later filed as official write-in candidates.

Charlie Harris emerged the winner of the 4th Ward seat after receiving 37 votes. Totals for his opponents were: Janet Knox, 29; Mark Williams, 18; and Virginia McAfee, 6.

Harris couldn't be reached for comment.

Hunter said he appreciates the voters' support and looks forward to working with the new council members.

Tennant said his new role as councilman "is no small task, but I'm very excited and feel I'm up to the challenge."

He said he will work to improve communication between council and residents and show respect to fellow city officials, even when their opinions may differ from his own.
