COLLIERS - Live music from a rock and roll band, classic cars and an assortment of food will be part of the Colliers Fire Department Festival on June 22.
Beginning at noon, the fire department's auxiliary will serve up fish, hot sausage sandwiches, sloppy joes, sloppy dogs and french fries, which festival-goers can enjoy at the department's sheltered pavilion.
The classic car show will be held from noon to 3:30 p.m., with registration at 11 a.m. There will be dash plaques, door prizes, a 50-50 drawing and music played by disc jockey John Fox.
Classic car owners interested in participating should call Tim Cain at (304) 748-1338.
Area children can play assorted games on the festival grounds and decorate their bicycles in patriotic style for the festival's parade.
It's been an annual tradition for children to join area fire departments, owners of antique cars and others in the procession along Harmon Creek Road beginning at 6 p.m.
Adults participating in the parade are asked to bring their vehicles to the former Colliers Steel building. Children with bicycles or all-terrain vehicles should line up at Colliers Primary School.
Following the parade, Jim Tate the Magic Man will perform at 7 p.m. And from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., the Buffington Brothers will perform hits from the 1950s and '60s and other eras.
The group has performed at Wheeling's Victorian Theater, the Sternwheel Festival, Capitol Theatre and Jamboree in the Hills and opened for Ray Price, John Conley and the PovertyNeck Hillbillies. Lead singer David Buffington has recorded with The Marcels in Pittsburgh.
Phyllis Aria, the auxiliary's president, said pending suitable weather, the Float Your Boat contest will be held at about 4 p.m. on Harmon Creek. Area residents who sponsor toy boats placed in the creek for $5 each will have a chance at winning a cash prize.
Begun in the 1970s, the festival has been a major fundraiser for the Colliers Volunteer Fire Department over the years.
"It's what we have to do to keep our fire department going, but it's fun, too," said Aria.
