BARREN, William John, 69, of Beaverton, Ore., passed away unexpectedly at home on June 7, 2013.
He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Henry and Jean Barren. His family moved to Steubenville, Ohio, when he was 4. Bill graduated from Steu-benville High School (Big Red) in 1962 and in Aug. 1962 he joined the Marine Corps. He served a tour in Vietnam; released from active duty in Nov. 1966 and the Marine Reserve in 1968; honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1968. In 1966 he married Grayce Kessler of Steubenville and they moved to Los Angeles. In 1971 he graduated from the Los Angeles Police Academy and was assigned to the Hollywood Division and later to Metro Division. He graduated from USC in 1977 and in 1979 he and his family moved to Eugene, Ore., where he was employed by the Springfield Police Department followed by the Oregon DOJ and later retired from Liberty Northwest/Liberty Mutual in 2009. In 1981 he received a life saving award from the Oregon Peace Officers Assoc. From 1997-2001 he was the chapter president of International Assoc. of Special Investigation Units and in 2008 President of Western States Auto Theft Investigations.
Bill is survived by his wife, Grayce Barren; two sons, David Henry (Hank) Barren of Portland, Ore., and William (Howard) Barren of Costa Mesa, Calif.; two granddaughters, Amber and Heather Barren of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Martha Besuden (Bob) of Commerce Township, Mich.; two brothers, Pete Barren (Mary) of Steubenville, Ohio, and Scott Barren of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; along with several nephews and nieces.
Bill enjoyed camping with family and friends and treating them to his barbecued ribs and chicken. He was an avid fan of high school and college football.
A memorial service will be held at Finley-Sunset Hills Chapel, 6801 SW Sunset Highway, Portland, OR, on July 20 at 2 p.m.
