Mingo High School

classes plan picnic

The Mingo Junction High School Classes of 1957, 1958 and 1959 will be having their first picnic on Aug. 3 at Aracoma Park in Mingo Junction.

The picnic will start at 1 p.m. and continue until whenever.

The cost is $15. Food will be catered and includes roast beef and baked chicken with three sides. Water and ice will be provided.

Those planning to attend are directed to call Richard Petrella at (740) 314-2542 no later than Monday.

Attendees are encouraged to bring any Mingo memorabilia of the era.

Olashuk delegate at

Kiwanis convention

Mary Kay Olashuk, a Follansbee resident and member of the Weirton Kiwanis Club, was one of 2,500 delegates globally and 17 from West Virginia attending the 98th-annual Kiwanis International Convention held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on June 27-29.

Kevin Dean of Morgantown was elected to a full term as one of 16 trustees on the international board.

And for the first time in Kiwanis' history, a woman was elected international vice president, making Sue Petrisin of Michigan the first female international president in 2015, which is the Kiwanis' 100th anniversary.

Members of the organization renewed their commitment to the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus around the globe. In partnering with UNICEF, 36.5 million of the 110 million goal has been reached, and tetanus has been eliminated in six of the 34 targeted countries.

Next year's convention will be held July 17-20 in Tokyo-Chiba Japan

Shipmates planning

September reunion

Shipmates who served aboard the battleship USS Missouri (BB-63) will hold their 40th-annual reunion Sept. 10-18 at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey Hotel in Harrisburg, Pa.

All veterans and interested parties along with their family and friends are invited.

The USS Missouri (BB-63) Association is a nonprofit organization made up of sailors, Marines, officers and midshipmen who have served aboard the famous battleship.

Brooke AARP Chapter

plans Victorian tea

The Brooke Area AARP Chapter 3910 will hold a Victorian Tea on July 27 at 2 p.m. at the Wellsburg Moose Lodge.

Victorian attire is optional, and patrons also can bring their favorite tea cup and saucer.

Tickets are $10 each, sold in advance by calling Linda Palmer (304) 737-3411 or stopping at the front desk of the Brooke County Library.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Brooke County Library, Brooke County Museum and the Holy Family Food Pantry.

Entertainment will be provided by the Donahues.

Upcoming programs organized by the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County include the following:

-- Coffee, doughnuts and a movie will be at the main library at 10 a.m. on July 19.

-- Kid's gaming will be at the Schiappa branch at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

-- A worm race will be held at the Schiappa branch on Thursday at 2 p.m. with an ice cream social to follow at 2:30 p.m. There also will be a worm race at the Toronto branch on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

-- Play and Learn the Alphabet for children age 2-6 and their caregiver offers letter-learning toys available to promote early literacy on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Schiappa branch. It also will be offered at the Toronto branch on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

-- Children can make and take a craft at the main library on Thursday any time from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

-- There will be a story and activity for children at the Toronto branch on Thursday at noon.

-- Children can paint an animal rock at the Adena branch on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. and at the Dillonvale-Mount Pleasant Branch on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.

-- Camping 101 program for families will be at the Toronto branch on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Call the library at (740) 537-1262 to register.

-- Teens and adults can decorate a flower-shaped cookie to put in dirt cake at the Brilliant branch on Thursday at 2 p.m. and at the Tiltonsville branch on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Register at either branch by calling the Brilliant branch at (740) 598-4028 and the Tiltonsville branch at (740) 859-5163.

-- Babygarten for children age birth to 2 and their caregiver will be held at the Tiltonsville branch on July 18 at 11 a.m.
