Follansbee girl receives honor

FOLLANSBEE - The U.S. Achievement Academy has announced that Bailey Roberts, a sophomore at Madonna High School and Follansbee resident, has been recognized for academic achievement as a U.S. National Honor Student award winner.

Bailey will appear in the U.S. Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, which is published and distributed nationally.

The USAA National Honor Student Awards provide honor students with many benefits and services and is a great tribute to the student's dedication, talent and ability, said George Stevens, founder of the United States Achievement Academy.

Bailey is the daughter of Steve and Kris Roberts of Follansbee.

Library offering craft class Monday

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be offering a craft class for children, age 9 and up, and adults at 3 p.m. Monday.

Participants will make an eye-catching coil bracelet. Stop by the library to see a sample.

Fundraiser in Wellsburg detailed

WELLSBURG - More than 30 vendors of direct sale products and crafts will participate in an event July 27 to raise funds for school supplies and food for children in need and a special classroom for children with autism.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wellsburg Banquet Hall, formerly the Wellsburg Fire Hall.

Table fees paid by vendors and proceeds from a Chinese auction and 50-50 drawing will go to the causes.

A bag of school supplies also will be distributed to Brooke County families that present proof of residency as well as a free haircut that day or gift certificate for a haircut from a local shop.

Reading program open house set

FOLLANSBEE - Area residents are invited to learn about the Energy Express summer reading program held by the Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Service at Jefferson Primary School through an open house held at the school from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Liz Gatts, Brooke County WVU Extension agent, said, "Our children, mentors and volunteers work hard throughout these summer months, but they also have fun and take pride in what they do. They look forward to sharing their art and writing with their family, friends, neighbors and community leaders."

The program's coordinators also will accept donations of school supplies for local children at that time as well as through a door-to-door campaign to be held Wednesday.

Donations also may be made between 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the school through Aug. 2, the last day for the program.

Zoo coming to the library

WELLSBURG - The Oglebay Good Zoo Zoo-To-You program will be visiting the Brooke County Public Library with a variety of interesting animals at 11 a.m. July 27.

'Peter Rabbit' story hour Thursday

FOLLANSBEE - The Follansbee Branch Library will hold a "Peter Rabbit" storytime with Kim Harless at 1 p.m. Thursday.
