VBS held this week at

Christ United Methodist

WEIRTON - "Everywhere Fun Fair" is the Vacation Bible School theme at Christ United Methodist Church, 3598 Pennsylvania Ave.

This year's VBS will be held through Thursday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. each day.

Children from age 3-12 are invited to participate in interactive lessons. The program also features a mission project with the Table of Hope program, where children will learn about feeding people in need in their hometowns and about children in need around the world.

Molly Kopa is VBS chair, with Michelle Sherninsky assisting. The Rev. Tim Conrad is pastor.

Household product, craft sale to benefit schools

WELLSBURG - More than 30 vendors of direct sale products and crafts will participate in an event July 27 to raise funds for school supplies and food for children in need and a special classroom for children with autism.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wellsburg Banquet Hall, formerly the Wellsburg Fire Hall.

Table fees paid by vendors and proceeds from a Chinese auction and 50-50 drawing will go to the causes.

A bag of school supplies also will be distributed to Brooke County families that present proof of residency as well as a free haircut that day or gift certificate for a haircut from a local shop.

Zoo coming to the library

WELLSBURG - The Oglebay Good Zoo Zoo-To-You program will be visiting the Brooke County Public Library with a variety of interesting animals at 11 a.m. July 27.

Library offers craft class

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be offering a craft class for children, age 9 and up, and adults at 3 p.m. today.

Participants will make an eye-catching coil bracelet. Stop by the library to see a sample.

"Kidz Day" set for Saturday

WEIRTON - MedExpress Urgent Care, located at 218 Three Springs Drive, has planned a Weirton Kidz Day to take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Marland Heights Park.

The event will include games, giveaways and prizes for those in attendance.

Hilltoppers Reunion Sunday

FOLLANSBEE - The annual Hilltoppers Reunion will be held July 28 at the Community House in Follansbee Park.

Oldtime residents of the Hooverson Heights area of Follansbee are invited to the reunion every year and are encouraged to bring a covered dish and participate in the afternoon of visiting and reminiscing with old friends.

Dinner is set for 1 p.m., and all beverages, table service and serving utensils will be furnished by the committee.

Bob Geary, assisted by Roy Waugh, head the planning committee and are assisted by Ruth Ann Eckles Shingleton, treasurer; Gloria Simmons Kotur, secretary.

Others on the arrangement committee are Betty Bioux Stoaks, Dorothy Lahita, Dolores Nixdorf Reese, Bessie Burton Eddy, Mary Jane Sabol Siudak, Jackie Trolley Perkins and David Eddy.

The Brindley, Bullock and Krystynak families started the reunion decades ago when they were reminiscing about the Oldtimers Baseball League that dates back to the 1920s era. The reunion usually attracts 150 friends together for the yearly event.

Weirton Community Day

at Kennywood Park

The 49th-annual Weirton Community Day at Kennywood Park is Aug. 12.

The event is organized by the Weir High School Band Boosters, and the band will perform in the evening parade, after the students completed their annual two-week band camp.

All-day discounted passes are on sale at Ted's Plaza Pharmacy in the Shop'n Save Plaza and Newbrough Photo on Main Street, Weirton.

Tickets are $25 each, and senior tickets are $15 with cash sales only.

Serbian Men's Club holding

chicken blasts every Wednesday

WEIRTON - The Serbian Men's Club will hold a chicken blast every Wednesday through Aug. 28 at the Serbian Picnic Grounds located on Kings Creek Road.

Those pre-ordering a chicken between 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. are guaranteed a whole chicken. Pick-up for pre-ordered chickens will be available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Take-out and eat-in will be available from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. A whole chicken will cost $6.75. Beverages also will be available for purchase, and the Serbian Women's Club will be selling fresh-cooked corn on the cob and homemade haluski.
