Thursday canceled

NEW CUMBERLAND - The acoustic music fundraiser Thursday at the Hancock Senior Wellness Center has been canceled.

Soccer Boosters to meet

WEIRTON - The Weir High School Soccer Boosters will meet at 7 p.m. Friday in the high school cafeteria.

Social action march scheduled

WHEELING - The Laughlin Memorial Chapel and Ohio Valley African American Students Association will host "A Day of Social Action" from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, beginning at the intersection of Chapline Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

A peaceful march will continue down Chapline Street and end at the Heritage Port Amphitheater. The march is open to all, and signs and banners are welcome. At the port, Laughlin Chapel's Angels of Praise will give a dance performance. Following, the mic will be open to all individuals wanting to be heard. The Rev. Akis named to dean's list

WEIRTON - Yoanna Akis of Weirton, a voice performance major, has been named to the spring 2013 dean's list at Westminster Choir College of Rider University.

Library to offer preschool program

AVELLA, Pa. - Avella Public Library, located at 11 School Court in the Avella Community Center, will sponsor a year-long preschool program this fall.

Classes for 2- and 3-year-olds not attending preschool will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Mondays. Classes will include play, music, dance, learning and socialization. The cost is $45 per month.

Classes for 3- and 4-year-olds will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $95 per month.

Paris Presbyterian Church set

to hold kids' ice cream social

PARIS, Pa. - The Paris Presbyterian Church will hold an ice cream party and Wii Golf tournament from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday for children in kindergarten through fifth grade at the church located at 127 Steubenville Pike.

Republicans holding Liberty picnic

FOLLANSBEE - The Brooke County Republican Executive Committee will hold a Liberty Day picnic at 3 p.m. Aug. 4 at Follansbee Park.

Pat McGeehan, U.S. Senate candidate; Party Chair Conrad Lucas; and Richie Parsons, Rep. David B. McKinley's district director, will speak.

Historical society plans presentation

BURGETTSTOWN, Pa. - The Fort Vance Historical Society will give a presentation on the Burgettstown Agriculture Fair, which was one of the area's most popular fairs from 1856 to 1939, featuring guest speaker Kathryn Slasor at 1 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Burgettstown Community Library. Park board prepares for festival

PARIS, Pa. - The Hanover Park Board is preparing for the Hanover-McClurg Covered Bridge Festival, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 21-22 at the Hanover Township Park, located on Old Steubenville Pike.

The Hanover site is one of 10 that are part of the Washington and Greene Counties Covered Bridge Festival. Crafters, artisans and vendors are needed. For information, contact Patty Rhoades at (724) 729-3657.

Meucci Lodge meets

WEIRTON - The Antonio Meucci Lodge held a meeting July 9, with President Regina Truax opening the meeting by welcoming Earl Wentz, guest of Silva Wentz.

Chaplain Mary Rose Spano gave the invocation and Boyd Barker led the Pledge of Allegiance. Angie Veltri called roll and gave the June meeting minutes; Carol Valenti gave the financial report; and Linda Pfabe gave the treasurer's report. Carol Valenti also was asked to read the Grand Lodge June 29 meeting minutes. Regina Truax announced the lodge would host the Nov. 20 Grand Lodge meeting. The July and August birthdays of Nick Iannetti, Wanda Perrone, Mary Lou Rossi, Jeanette LaRosa, Tony LaRosa, Patsy Branczio, Anthony Guglielimo, Nick Smarella, Carl Truax, Delores LaRosa and Mary Longhi were acknowledged. Nick Smarella and Richard Viglianca were sent get-well cards, and Maria Hayes was sent a sympathy card.
