August 5, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

WEIRTON - Metropolitan Savas, Hierarch of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh, visited All Saints Greek Orthodox Church on the celebration of their parish feast day, Sunday of All Saints, June 30.

On the Eastern Orthodox Church calendar, the Feast of All Saints is celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost, according to the traditional Julian Calendar followed by all Eastern Orthodox Christians worldwide regarding the calculation and celebration of Lent, Easter and Pentecost.

During his pastoral visit, Metropolitan Savas tonsured, or blessed, three "readers," a rank of the laity giving these young men the blessing to read the Epistles and Old Testament passages in the context of the various church services, to chant and to serve as acolytes, or altar boys, in the sanctuary.

The Metropolis of Pittsburgh covers parishes in three states, including southeastern, central and western Pennsylvania; all of West Virginia; and northeastern and central Ohio.
