Weirton inductees keep spirit alive

August 7, 2013

The heritage of a community was on display Sunday when members of the Class of 2013 were inducted into the Weirton Hall of Fame.

This year's honorees, like all who have been selected to the hall, included everyday citizens who have volunteered their time to longtime public servants. In short, they continued the tradition of finding ways to give back to their community.

Consider Rick Witkowski, who earned induction in the music and fine arts category. The longtime musician and founder of Studio L who has also written and performed music for many television shows and movies, summed up his commitment to Weirton while singing his acceptance speech. He reminded everyone that "The older you get the more you realize the more you give, the more you get."

Also earning spots in this year's class were John B. Sorrenti in the public service category for his work on many boards and organizations; George Canei in the category of sports for his work with youth programs and as a commentator on WEIR-AM; Emily Horvat in the professional category for her 40 years of service with The Weirton Daily Times; Tony P. Sellitti in the business and industry category for his work in the development of two Weirton neighborhoods and more than 600 area homes; Millie Gerbo in the education category for serving as a teacher and an advocate for children with disabilities; and Mary "Molly" Binkowski Porter in the category of public service, who was the first woman elected to serve on Weirton Council.

Established by council in 2008, the goal of the Weirton Hall of Fame remains to recognize and honor former and current residents of the city for their accomplishments.

With Sunday's dinner at the Weirton Knights of Columbus Hall, the hall of fame has continued its tradition.

Each of this year's inductees has helped to keep that spirit alive, and each deserves to be congratulated.
