WEIRTON - The Weirton Medical Center Retirees Organization met for their annual birthday celebration recently at Gio's Restaurant with 49 members present.
Judy Tate and Wanda Champ provided a birthday cake and cupcakes. Helen Bright, celebrating her 90th birthday, was honored as the "birthday girl" and members sang "Happy Birthday."
Following lunch, President Joyce Barnhart introduced guest speaker Dr. Carol Slomski, a breast surgeon and Weirton Medical Center Breast Care Department team member. Slomski, a board-certified surgeon, specializes in women's and men's breast health. Using the message "Let's Reduce Cancer," she discussed, breast cancer testing, surgical options, follow-up treatments, maintaining healthy weight, eating well, exercising, protecting skin from sun damage, knowing family histories and having regular check-ups and mammograms. Slomski ended with a question-and-answer period.
Josie Glauser, Rhadine Ross and Donna Karas gave their reports. Barnhart introduced the newest member, Mary Lou Pepper; the organization now has 62 members in good standing. Nancy Reyer, Telephone Committee member, is relocating to North Carolina, and anyone interested in replacing her on the committee should call Barnhart or Vice President Corliss Brown.
Barbara Andrews won the 50/50 drawing.
Tate will display sample sundresses made from pillowcases as part of the group's ongoing "Sleeping Bag" project during the next meeting.
Members have agreed to establish a scholarship fund to benefit those studying a health care field, and Tate was named Scholarship Committee chair. Tate will update members on the scholarship charter and potential financing at the August meeting. Membership input is welcomed, and those unable to attend the August meeting may contact Tate at (304) 564-5831.
The next meeting will be held at noon Aug. 13 at Gio's.
