MARKWELL, Richard Kent, 82, of Steubenville, OH, died Sunday, August 11, 2013, at Valley Hospice North.
He was born in Brackenridge, PA on January 29, 1931, a son of the late Bernard Floyd and Mildred Finley Markwell.
Richard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and entered Adjunct Generals School of Stenography.
Graduated from Har- Brach High School in Brackenridge, PA, received his B.A. degree from West Liberty State College, where he was a piano student of Ida Hertz. Richard received his Masters Degree in music from Duquesne University.
His work and career experience included Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation, Martins Ferry Board of Education Instrumental Music, Buckeye Local School District Instrumental and Vocal Music, Indian Creek School District High Choir Director and he retired from Buchanan Jr. High School as Instrumental Music Instructor.
Richard also had worked at Covenant Presbyterian Church as choir director and occasional soloist and Wintersville United Methodist Church as choir director and pianist. He was a gifted pianist with local bands and performed at weddings, dances, parties and solo engagements. He had performed at the first yearly Dean Martin celebration in Steubenville.
Richard's memberships included lifetime member of National Education Association, Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Alumni Association West Liberty University, American Federation of Musicians and a 38-year member of the former Civic Choral Society.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by beloved daughter, Amy Kathleen and beloved son, Ryan Kent; brothers Eugene, Bernard, Jack and Robert Markwell; sisters, Margaret English and Betty Waltenbaugh.
Richard is survived by his loving and adoring wife of 58 years, Ruth Glover Markwell; special friend, Chris McDonald; nieces, Deborah McGee, Jackie Lemley, Marida Howell, Darlene Cave, Maria Wilkens, Kerryn McMeans, Jann Green and Kathleen Wellman; nephews, Kevin, Greg, Robert and Christopher Markwell, Richard English, Joel and Mark Waltenbaugh.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Wintersville United Methodist Church at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Clint Quillen officiating.
Richard will be remembered for his love of music, family and friends, his kindness and especially for his sense of humor.
