WHEELING - The upcoming Wheeling Hibernian Irish Road Bowling Ohio Valley Championship received a $500 boost Tuesday from the Ohio County Commission.

Commissioners Tim McCormick, Randy Wharton and Orphy Klempa approved granting money from the hotel-motel tax fund to the competition, slated for Sept. 7 in Wheeling. The annual event typically kicks off at the Sonneborn Shelter on Wheeling Park Road. During the competition, participants fling a small metal ball down the road in an attempt to beat others to the finish line.

McCormick noted that although the event has been in place for three years in Wheeling, this is the first time its organizers have asked county officials for money.

"It's the largest in the state of West Virginia. There are other counties now copying what this group does," he said.

Commissioners also approved a $2,000 hotel tax fund request from the Wheeling Heritage Port Sternwheel Festival, slated Sept. 12-14.

McCormick noted he attended Heritage Music BluesFest in Wheeling last weekend and enjoyed himself. The commission donated money to it last fiscal year.

"BluesFest was super. They do a fantastic job down there," he said. "The money we donated was well spent."

Meanwhile, interim Airport Manager Russell Escue asked commissioners to approve payment requests related to airport improvements: $15,000 to Affordable Asphalt Maintenance of Parkersburg, W.Va., for paving work and the release of a $96,850 retainer to Affordable Asphalt Maintenance for finished work.

The next Ohio County Commission meeting is set for 6 p.m. Aug. 26 in Room 215 of the City-County Building, 1500 Chapline St., Wheeling.
