100th birthday today

She was one of eight children and the oldest daughter of Arthur and Ida Burks of Dooley Count, Ga. Her surviving sisters live in Florida and New Jersey.

She came to Weirton with her late husband, Louis Thompson Sr., in 1937. They were married for 51 years.

They had seven children, including Deanne Bonner of Georgia, Arthur "Dead-Eye" Thompson, Louis "Do-Eye" Thompson of Ohio, Earlene Jones and Rickey Thompson and the late Azzie M. Gregory and Viola Thompson. Burks has 17 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great grandchildren. The family has held regular reunions for almost 40 years.

Burks has been a member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church for 76 years and served as Missionary Board president and Ushers Board president and head cook.

She worked as a housekeeper and a homemaker.

"She settled on being a good wife, mother, friend, worker and listening to all who crossed her path," said organizers. "Her wisdom was taught to all who love her."
