Eleanor Straight leaves big legacy

August 30, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

This week marks the end of an era at the Hancock County Courthouse.

Eleanor Straight is stepping away from her 36-year career in local government, which includes 24 years as Hancock County clerk, leaving behind many co-workers, friends and the thousands of residents who have come to rely on her service.

Anyone who has ever done business in the courthouse, been exposed to the elections process of Hancock County or just attended one of the many community events in the area, has, no doubt, met Straight at one point or another. She has, without doubt, been one of the most visible public servants in the area in recent history, always willing to help out or lend an ear to anyone coming into her office, whether it be to register to vote, review information from the county commission or dig through birth or property records.

Other officials and county employees have come and gone over the years, but Straight has been a constant. In most ways, she has been the heart and soul that has kept Hancock County going.

Respected by many, no matter the party affiliation, community or background, Straight has been the go-to person for many and leaves a legacy that we are certain will be remembered for years to come.

We wish her well in her retirement, although we're sure she will find some way to remain a part of the events of our communities.
