Holiday Cookbook entries sought

It's time again for area cooks to dig into their files and bring out their best recipes to enter in the annual Holiday Cookbook presented by the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times.

Entry blanks are appearing in the newspapers, and organizers are looking for some of your favorite recipes to compile in a cookbook that will be published Nov. 26.

If you have received compliments on a lemon pound cake or a peanut butter cream pie, have a way with fried chicken or know a different recipe for macaroni and cheese, send those recipes to share with our cooks and readers.

The five categories are the same as in the past - appetizers and breads, cakes and pies, holiday cookies and candy, main dishes and casseroles and side dishes and salads. There will be a first-place prize of a $35 Kroger gift card in each category and a $25 Kroger gift card for second place in each category. The best of the best, the grand prize winner, will receive $300 cash, with $125 going to the first runner-up. Everyone who is invited to attend the annual cook-off will receive a gift, and will have the opportunity to sample the submissions.

Natalie Doty of Wintersville was the grand prize winner in 2012 with her Cranberry-Pear Clafouti. She will be one of the judges to "taste test" the finalist recipes chosen for the Nov. 7 cook-off at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville.

The deadline for recipes is Oct. 25, so start looking for your favorites now.

"Our annual cookbook is one our most popular publications each year," said Ross Gallabrese, executive editor of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times. "We're always impressed with the quality of the submissions."

There is one new rule for this year. Due to space limitations, all recipes submitted may not be published in this year's cookbook. All winning and finalists recipes will be included, however, as well as many others.

If you do not have an entry form, you can just type or write the recipe legibly on a letter-size sheet of stationary, including your name, address and telephone number. Entries written on recipe cards or smaller-size stationary can get lost in the shuffle. Also, please put each recipe entry on a different sheet of paper because it is hard to separate the categories when they are all on one sheet of paper.

Entries can be mailed to: Herald-Star, The Weirton Daily Times, Holiday Cookbook, 401 Herald Square, Steubenville, OH 43952; submitted by e-mail to emccoy@heraldstaronline.com; or dropped off in person at the offices of the newspapers.
