It will be a big weekend out on the open road for some of our local organizations.
On Saturday, Weirton will see two motorcycle runs taking place to assist the Weirton United Way and a local veterans park.
We hope to see a great turnout for both events, and encourage our residents to come out and participate.
This will be the 10th year for the Weirton United Way's poker run, which will begin with registration at 10 a.m. at the Fairfield Inn and Suites. The riders will depart at noon, spending the day traveling throughout the Tri-State Area and raising money for the charity's 2013 campaign.
The Weirton United Way is working to raise $280,000 to benefit its 15 member agencies, which provide a variety of services geared primarily toward our youth and those in need in our community.
The second motorcycle run of the day will begin and end at the Weirton chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and will benefit the Brooke-Hancock County Veterans Memorial Park. Riders will depart the VFW at 1 p.m.
The park was created by area veterans to pay tribute to their brothers and sisters in arms. All proceeds from the run will go toward the park's upkeep.
Both rides are deserving of our residents' support and we hope they both get great crowds, whether you ride or simply want to find some way to contribute to the efforts.
