WEIRTON - The city of Weirton's annual Fall Cleanup has been scheduled.
Cleanup activities will begin with a Metal Items collection day Oct. 4. As part of this collection, which will be citywide, Weirton Public Works crews will be picking up metal items from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Acceptable items include stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, hot water tanks, old railings, bicycle frames, metal shelving and other items.
These items must be placed on the curb by all residents no later than 7 a.m.
Collection for household items will take place from Oct. 7 to Oct. 11. During this time, items will be taken on the same day as residents' regular garbage collection.
Household items must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. on each collection day. A fee will be assessed to residents if crews have to return to an area after it has been completed.
Items excluded from the cleanup collection include construction materials, vehicle tires or parts, tree trimmings and brush, propane tanks, hazardous materials, air conditioners, lawnmowers, paint and paint cans.
The city will accept electronics during cleanup activities; however, they must be separated from regular household items.
Paint and paint cans can be recycled at the Hancock County Solid Waste Authority on Gas Valley Road in New Manchester. The authority can be contacted at (304) 459-3269.
Recycling collection will not take place during the Cleanup Week activities.
According to officials, scavenging of garbage or other articles placed curbside for cleanup will be prohibited. Individuals cited shall be fined between $5 and $500, plus costs. For subsequent offenses, they may face up to 30 days imprisonment in addition to the fines.
