Oglebayfest to include entertainment, parade, fireworks

WHEELING - Oglebayfest will be held Oct. 4-6 at Oglebay Park and include activities at several sites within the park.

"Oglebayfest began in 1978 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Oglebay and provides an annual 'thank-you' to all who visit us year-round," said John Hargleroad, director of operations.

The Phil Maxwell Artists' and Gourmet Markets will be located in the Mansion Woods next to the Mansion Museum. The markets offers a view of artisans at work and a selection of local and regional foods. The markets will be open from noon to 7 p.m. Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 5 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 6.

ANTIQUE?CAR?DISPLAY — Oglebayfest’s antique car display will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 on the Mansion Museum lawn at Oglebay. The display is one of the many events planned during the festival Oct. 4-6.

The Ohio County Country Fair at Site One features a variety of "down-home" activities including a baked goods auction, square dance, hog-calling contest, fiddling contest, pedal power contest, hitch class show, rock-throwing contest, baby crawling contest and state championship pony pull. The fair also will feature demonstrations of rug-braiding, butter-making, corn-grinding, blacksmithing and quilting.

Antique farm equipment will be on display, and quilts and needleworks will be on display at Camp Russel. Sheep, horses, pigs, cows and goats will be on display in the livestock tent.

The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at the Good Zoo. Roland Hobbs, who recently retired from the Wheeling Park Commission after serving 40 years, will be the grand marshal.

The fireworks display will be held at 8 p.m. Oct. 5 at Schenk Lake.

Dustin McCray will perform from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Hickman Lounge. Markus and James will perform from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 5 at the lounge, and the Mansfield 5 will perform from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Glessner Auditorium.

Entertainment at the Rathskeller, located at Hess Shelter, includes Alpen Glow German Band, International Fold Dancers and Steve Grkman with his button box accordion.

The Cabin Fever String Band will lead a square dance from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 4. Haller Shelter will host Miller, Smith and Mazure Band from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Oct. 4, Sarah Mahan-Hays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 5 and Smoke Daddy and the Crawfish from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Oct. 5. There is no charge for admission to the Haller Shelter events, but those attending must be 21.

The Good Zoo is offering free admission Oct. 5-6, where visitors can enjoy the Dinosaur Exhibit.

"Several life-sized, moving, roaring dinosaurs will be on display through Boo at the Zoo," said Penny Miller, zoo director.

The zoo will also feature fire safety demonstrations Oct. 5 in cooperation with the Wheeling Fire Department.

"Come meet local firefighters and practice getting out of a smoke-filled house," said Miller.

There will be glassblowing demonstrations on the Mansion Museum lawn all three days and an antique car display on the lawn on Oct. 6.

The Belgian horse display will be at Site One Oct. 5-6. Pony rides and inflatable rides will be offered at Schenk Lake Oct. 5-6. The Schrader Environmental Center will present "Mike Kandis and Friends" featuring bearded dragons and ball pythons and other reptiles. Admission is $2 per person.
