Colliers PTA meets
The Colliers Primary School Parent-Teachers Association recently held the first meeting of the school year.
President Tawnya Dennis presided. The fourth-graders led the Pledge of Allegiance. The officers, principal and staff were introduced.
Principal Jo-Ellen Goodall reported the school has 191 students enrolled. New staff members include Mamie Keenan, cook; Mark McGown, custodian; and Patty Welling, secretary.
The School of Excellence signs were installed during the summer by the Brooke County Schools Board of Education, and a community celebration will be held at the school Oct. 10. Details will be announced.
Jodi Fabian gave a report on Boxtops and Labels for Education; Becky Moore gave a report on the school's clothes closet; Heather Vojovodich gave the membership report; Darlene Brennan gave the Ways and Means report; and Chrissy Carbashio gave the homeroom parents report. Stephanie Bubeck reported the library was scheduled to open Sept. 23.
The tug of war winners will be recognized at the next meeting.
The school will be collecting Coca-Cola codes to purchase rewards such as sporting equipment. The codes can be sent to school with pupils, dropped off at the school office or brought to a PTA meeting. The codes can be found on bottle caps, carton boxes and all Coke products.
The group approved the budget. Door prizes were awarded.
The next meeting will be held Oct. 8.
The Colliers Volunteer Fire Department recently elected officers.
They are as follows: President Theo Keenan, Vice President Jack Cain, Secretary Jim Dimirack and Treasurer Doran Daughtery. Keenan will be the fire chief, and Richard C. Bailey will be the assistant fire chief.
Fish fry to close
Phyllis Aria, Colliers VFD Auxiliary president, announced the weekly fish fry will close after Friday and resume in the spring.
An opening date will be announced in April.
Trappers set date
The Northern Panhandle Trappers Association met recently with President Jack Cain presiding.
The group selected 5 p.m. Dec. 7 at Colliers Fire Hall for their annual holiday dinner.
Paul Summers was a guest.
The next meeting will be held Tuesday.
Alumni plan events
The Colliers Alumni and Friends Association met recently with President Darlene Brennan presiding.
The slate of officers will remain the same, including President Brennan, Vice President Dean Heinen, Secretary Jo-Ellen Goodall and Treasurer Lori Robey.
The group will sponsor a 50/50 giveaway and participate in the primary school's open house and craft sale Nov. 7. The group will sell Colliers School plates and take orders for the Colliers calendars, featuring photographs of the school and community.
The annual $12 dues should be remitted immediately.
Goodall reported the fifth- and sixth-graders will be honored at the community celebration to recognize the school being named as a West Virginia School of Excellence.
The group distributed school bags to fifth-graders.
The next meeting will be held Wednesday at the school.
Open house set
The Colliers Primary School open house will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 7 and include a craft show in the school's multi-purpose room.

The Colliers VFD Auxiliary will sponsor a community Halloween party from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 19 at the fire hall.
