Newell and Chester volunteer firefighters continued their recovery efforts Monday after a man and woman were seen jumping into the Ohio River from the Newell Bridge near state Route 2 on Sunday. Recovery teams returned to the water at 9 a.m. Monday and worked into the afternoon. Another group was expected to work until sunset, at which point the Newell Volunteer Fire Department planned to call off the search, said assistant fire Chief Tim Steele. Witnesses told Hancock County sheriff’s deputies that the couple was seen kissing, stepping up on the bridge rail and jumping into the water. Sheriff Ralph Fletcher said no missing persons reports have been filed. The water where the couple jumped is at least 25 feet deep, Steele said.
