Applefest pet show has expanded

The Wellsburg Applefest Pet Show on Saturday has expanded, with winners to be named for 36 categories, up from 12 last year.

The event will be held at 1 p.m. at the Municipal Insurance parking lot at Ninth and Charles streets.

Ernie Jack, who is co-chairing the event with Becky Ramsey, said in addition to dogs and cats, trophies will go out to a variety of other animals, including birds, rodents, lizards and turtles.

"We also will have categories for the jumpiest frog and longest snake," Jack said.

Sew-in for Amazing Grace Pillowcase

The Amazing Grace Pillowcase project for Pittsburgh Children's Hospital will hold its next sew-in on Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Eastern Gateway Community College Pugliese Training Center at 110 John Scott Highway, Steubenville.

There will be refreshments and door prizes.

Library programs are detailed

Upcoming programs of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County include the following:

-- Story Time will be held at the Brilliant branch on Thursday and Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. and at the Schiappa branch on Mondays, Oct. 7-21 at 6 p.m. It also will be offered at the Tiltonsville branch on Wednesday and Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m. Story Time is for children ages 4-6 and offers stories, songs and activity. -- Karaoke for teens will be held on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Schiappa branch. Take the stage or watch.

-- Local author Angel Waggoner will discuss and sign copies of her book, "The Keeper," at the Schiappa branch on Thursday at 6 p.m. Copies of the book can be purchased that evening.

-- The library has photographically preserved the Ohio Valley's steel industry with 50 aesthetically framed and captioned images that were taken by an architectural industrial photographer. The photo exhibit, "Steel Industry In Jefferson County," will be at Eastern Gateway Community College through Oct. 26 during regular operating hours.

To kick off the exhibit, the library will host a reception open to the public from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today in the Founders Hall room at EGCC. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, photographer Benjamin Halpern will discuss the photographs and steel industry during a presentation to be held in room 2102 at EGCC. Satellite office open Wednesday

The satellite office of the Jefferson County Veterans Service Commission will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Dillonvale American Legion, Liberty Street, Dillonvale, to assist veterans, dependents of veterans and/or veteran's widows with Veterans Administration pensions, compensations, burials, schooling, medical assistance and other veteran's benefits.

Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is closed every Wednesday afternoon to the public.
